I couldn't think of a pretentious word to describe myself and what I do, so I just used the word, pretentious, instead. My name is Allan (with 2 L's) and I live and work in Scotland. I make short videos and I take photos.
Ever since I was a youngster, I have been passionate about films and filmmaking; and over the last 20-odd years, I've gone from a pre-schooler who could recite the screenplay to all 3 Star Wars films, to a teenager who idolised Kubrick and the Coens, to a slightly overweight man-child who owns far too many DVDs.
I am a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, having left in 2007 with BA (hons) in Time Based Art. In the years following, I have worked as a freelance camera operator/video editor; and, currently serve as Head of Film Production for Highlands based production companies DP Digital Media and System2 Film. I have worked on projects for a variety of clients such as The University of the Highlands and Islands, NHS Highland, Birchwood Highland, TFX Performing Arts Academy, JBT Distribution, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Aldi, Visit Scotland, Ross Shire Engineering, Highnet Telecoms, Tamdhu Distillery, Tomatin Distillery and The Highland Council.
For my non-commercial projects, I have developed a method of working (a manifesto of sorts) that has served me well over the years. I like to make short films that I can write and produce within 24 hours. This can be liberating as well as constricting but is always challenging and, ultimately, satisfying.
